Michael Jordan is commonly regarded as the best basketball player ever.
He spent fifteen seasons in the NBA, where he won six NBA championships while playing for the Chicago Bulls. During the 1980s and 1990s, he played a big part in making basketball and the NBA famous all over the world. Because of this, he became a famous figure known worldwide.
Early life and career
Jordan came from Wilmington, North Carolina, and he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. When he was a freshman, he made the game-winning basket in the 1982 national championship game against Georgetown. He was named the best college player in the country in his second and third years of college and left North Carolina after his junior year. He also helped the U.S. basketball team win Olympic gold medals in 1984 in Los Angeles and in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain.
In 1984, Jordan was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. He won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season, led the league in scoring for seven consecutive seasons, and scored over 3,000 points in a single season in 1986–87. He was named NBA MVP five times and Defensive Player of the Year in 1988. In 1993, he briefly retired to play baseball, returning to basketball in 1995. In the 1995–96 season, he led the Bulls to a historic 72-10 record. From 1996 to 1998, the Bulls, led by Jordan, won three consecutive championships, with Jordan named NBA Finals MVP each time. Jordan retired again after the 1997–98 season.
Jordan stayed connected to the sport by buying a piece of the Washington Wizards in 2000 and becoming their basketball operations president. However, just handling team matters and finances wasn’t enough for him. So, in 2001, he gave up his ownership and management roles to become a player on the Wizards. His return to the NBA for the second time was welcomed by the league, which had seen fewer fans and TV viewers since his retirement in 1998. He finished his career with impressive stats, including 32,292 total points and an average of 30.12 points per game, the best in NBA history. He also had 2,514 steals, the second-highest ever.
In 2006, Jordan became a minority owner and manager of the Charlotte Bobcats, later known as the Charlotte Hornets. By 2010, he owned the majority of the team, becoming the first former NBA player to do so. Jordan was a legendary player, known for his exceptional skills, earning the nickname “Air Jordan” for his jumping ability. He also had lucrative endorsements, starred in the movie Space Jam (1996), and was recognized as one of the NBA’s greatest players in 1996. He entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
